From the early 1970’s the NSMC organised twice yearly courses affording offshore medics the opportunity to receive refresher training in occupational health.

The Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations 1989 came into force on 13 September 1990 requring initial, and ongoing training for Offshore Medics with Health & Safety Executive approval to provide this training.

The North Sea Medical Centre is approved by the HSE to provide this training.

We now offer these statutory training courses by Distance Learning. Currently pre-entry qualification is Registered General or Enrolled Nurse or ex-Services personnel holding equivalent qualification (CMT1 : Army; LMA or higher : Navy).

The duration of the Certificate course is 6 months with participants required to complete six assignments and attend the North Sea Medical Centre in Gorleston for two practical sessions of one weekend in the middle of the course and for a final week at the end.

The end result of the course is Pass or Fail and successful participants can then apply to work as Offshore Medics throughout the British sector of the North Sea.

Established offshore medics are required to complete the a refresher course every 3 years.
